Production I.G and Masaaki Yuasa open up a Kickstarter photo

File this one under "I didn't see this coming at all."

Masaaki Yuasa (Samurai Champloo, Mind Game) and the folks at Production I.G have opened up a $150,000 Kickstarter in the hopes of funding a fifteen minute short called Kick-Heart. The tale follows two pro wrestlers named Romeo and Juliet, as they meet in the ring and fall in love. The caveat? Juliet is actually a nun by day, and Romeo secretly enjoys getting the living hell beaten out of him in the ring.

The fact that a Japanese studio is jumping into this kind of crowd sourcing really through me off guard, but I'm glad somebody finally went ahead with it. Production I.G wants to reach out to fans on a global basis and find a more direct way to fund these weird and quirky experimental films, and I think trying to do so via Kickstarter isn't a bad idea. The question is whether or not this'll actually work.

There's a lot of really interesting concept art on the Kickstarter page and I implore you all to check it out. I'm not a huge fan of Yuasa's style, but I'd love to see something like this succeed and inspire more studios to give it a shot. The anime industry can never have enough bizarre and artsy short films as far as I'm concerned.

Check out the official Kick-Heart Kickstarter page here.
