Also, just in case some of you are curious, as for titles boys use, boys
similarly use the title "hyung" (literally older brother) to call out
to or talk to either their real older brother or a male slightly older
than they are and likewise use the title "nuna" (literally older sister)
to call out to or talk to their real older sister or a female slightly
older than they are.
The reason Koreans use titles instead of names even when talking to
people slightly older than they are is that Koereans are heavily
influenced by the philosopher Confucius. He taught people to respect
older people because older people, in general, possess more life
experiences and thus more wisdom than younger people do. This age
etiquette shouldn't sound strange to people of western culture either,
for even westerners, in general, think it is rude for a child to call
his or her parents by first name. Koreans extend this age etiquette to
all spheres of relationships in which any age difference exists. Even a
mere one-year difference matters especially among students and the
younger one must refer to the older one using a title, or just as
commonly, by using a name followed by an appropriate title (for example,
Jason oppa! Paul hyung! Mary nuna! John a-jo-ssi!).
